UK visa information
Embarking on a bespoke luxury journey to the United Kingdom and Ireland requires meticulous planning, particularly concerning entry requirements. Understanding the visa and Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) protocols is essential for a seamless experience.
Understanding the UK's entry requirements
The UK's entry requirements vary based on your nationality, purpose of visit, and duration of stay. Many travellers can enter the UK for short stays without a visa, while others may need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa or an ETA.
Standard Visitor visa
If you're from a country that requires a visa to enter the UK, you'll need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa. This visa permits tourism, business activities, short-term studies (up to six months), and other permitted activities. The application process involves providing a valid passport, supporting documents, and paying a fee. For detailed information and to apply, visit the official UK government page: Standard Visitor visa (opens in new tab).
Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)
The UK is introducing the ETA system for visa-exempt travellers. An ETA is a digital permission to travel, not a visa, and is required before boarding your journey to the UK. The rollout is phased:
- From 8 January 2025: Eligible non-European travellers, including those from the USA, Canada, and Australia, must obtain an ETA before traveling to the UK.
- From 2 April 2025: Eligible European travellers will also need an ETA to enter the UK.
The ETA costs £10 and is valid for multiple entries over two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Applications can be made via the UK ETA app or online through the official government website. For comprehensive details and to apply, please refer to: Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) (opens in new tab).
British-Irish Visa Scheme
For Chinese and Indian nationals, the British-Irish Visa Scheme facilitates travel between the UK and Ireland on a single visa for certain short-stay and visitor visas. Under this scheme:
- Eligible Irish Visas: Include visit (family/friend), visit (tourist), conference/event, and business visas.
- Eligible UK Visas: Encompass all standard visitor categories where the maximum period for a single visit is six months and Permitted Paid Engagement visas.
Travellers must first enter the country that issued the visa. For example, if you have an Irish short-stay visa and wish to visit the UK, you must travel to Ireland first. Similarly, with a UK visitor visa, you must enter the UK before traveling to Ireland. For detailed guidance, refer to the official UK government page: British-Irish visa scheme (opens in new tab).
Application process
- Check eligibility: Determine if you need a visa or an ETA based on your nationality and travel plans. Use the UK's official visa checker tool: Check if you need a UK visa (opens in new tab).
- Prepare documentation: Ensure you have a valid passport with at least one blank page. Additional supporting documents may be required.
- Submit application: Apply online for a visa or ETA, providing accurate personal information and paying the applicable fee.
- Await approval: Processing times vary, so apply well in advance of your planned departure.
Important considerations
- Validity: Both the Standard Visitor visa and ETA allow stays of up to six months per visit.
- Activities permitted: Tourism, visiting family or friends, business meetings, short courses, and certain paid engagements are allowed. However, you cannot undertake paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person unless specified.
- Entry decision: Possession of a visa or ETA does not guarantee entry; final decisions are made by UK Border Force officers upon arrival.
